The Many Types of Sushi in Japan

When people hear the word “sushi”, many imagine small pieces of fish on top of rice.
But in Japan, sushi comes in many styles, and each region has its own traditions.

🍣 Nigiri Sushi(握り寿司)

Nigiri sushi is the most well-known style.
A small ball of vinegared rice is shaped by hand and topped with fresh fish such as tuna, salmon, or shrimp.

🌿 Maki Sushi(巻き寿司)

Maki sushi is rolled sushi.
Rice and ingredients are wrapped in nori seaweed using a bamboo mat.
There are thin rolls, thick rolls, vegetable rolls, and many creative variations.

🌈 Chirashi Sushi(ちらし寿司)

The photo above shows a beautiful example of chirashi sushi.
Fresh fish and vegetables are placed on top of seasoned sushi rice, making it colorful and perfect for celebrations.

🌏 Regional Sushi Traditions
